Are Flowers Smell So Sweet?

Ozone shields our planet from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, but it may be also be keeping bees away from their favorite flowers, according to a new study. Ozone doesn’t just live high in Earth’s atmosphere; near the ground, it contributes to smog, and ground-level ozone has gradually increased in most places because of industrial pollution from vehicles and fossil-fuel burning. Ozone is known to react with and break down molecules called volatile organic compounds. That’s a concern because flowers emit certain kinds of these compounds that, like a natural perfume, entice bees and other pollinators to visit the flowers. In the laboratory, the scientists exposed groups of them to ozone levels ranging from 0 parts per billion (ppb) of ozone to 120 ppb, which is found in some urban areas. A machine called a mass spectrometer measured levels of scent molecules as far as 4.5 meters away from the flowers. At 4.5 m away, levels of most of the scent’s component molecules ranged from 17% to 31% lower at 120 ppb than at 0 ppb ozone... Little to no decrease occurred at 0 m away, showing that ozone’s effect increases with distance. Additional lab tests showed that unaltered scent is attractive to a common type of bumblebee (Bombus terrestris); bees preferred spending time in scent-laced air over scent-free air, the researchers say. Because some molecules’ levels decreased more than others in the lab tests, the scent’s strength isn’t all that’s at stake: The scent itself may change a bit, too. The findings suggest pollinators could struggle more over time to locate flowers, as ozone pollution in most parts of the world will keep rising as a result of industrialization and climate change.

The Lightest Metal Ever

Aerospace giant Boeing has released a video showcasing the lightest metal structure ever, which is also one of the lightest materials known to science, called Microlattice. The entire structure is 99.99% air and is comparable to the hollow honeycomb architecture of bone. The structure is composed of a network of super thin, hollow struts. The struts are around 100 micrometers in diameter and have walls just 100 nanometers thick. It's this design that makes Microlattice 10 times lighter than Styrofoam. However, despite it being insanely light, it is also extremely strong.If planes made from this material we can fly more faster because this material is the lightest...And this mean burn less fuel...

Earth Microbe on Meteorites...

The microbe above is happier living on meteorites than on Earth.The microscopic organism—an archaea known as Metallosphaera sedula (seen as a cluster of tiny dots sitting in the middle of the meteoritic dust particle pictured above)—was originally found in 1989 living in Italy's hot acidic sulfur springs around Vesuvius. These so-called chemolithotrophs normally feed on iron and sulfur minerals in rocks and leave behind a residue of heavy metals. This makes them useful in mining operations as an environmentally friendly alternative to leaching the metals with toxic chemicals.To test these microbes’ "astrofermination" capability, the researchers gave them an energy drink made of powdered meteorite and recorded how much nickel they released in the jars. Future work will include testing the survivability of the microbes in a vacuum and with synthetic martian minerals...

Drinking the equivalent of a double espresso 3 hours before bedtime shifts the clock back by an average of 40 minutes.Although caffeine’s effects on alertness and sleep are well known, researchers weren't sure how it affects the circadian clock in humans. The researchers also found that human cells in the lab exposed to caffeine lengthened their circadian clocks, an effect that the researchers linked to molecules known to play a role in cells’ 24-hour rhythms. The work also suggests that drinking coffee at the right time can help people adjust more quickly to jet lag, which is due to the body’s clock being out of sync with the local time zone.   Other research has shown that caffeine affects the circadian clock in animals such as fruit flies.

How to make Lemon Soap in home?

 

Supplies:

***1 1/2 cups Goats Milk Soap Base or Shea Butter Soap Base, cubed

***4-6 drops Lemon Essential Oil

***Dried Lemon zest of 3-4 lemons

Step one: Cut soap into cubes and microwave in 30 second intervals (I like to use a large Pyrex measuring cup to melt the soap in). This recipe makes 3 bars of soap and I used about 15 cubes of goat’s milk soap base.
Step two: Melt soap for about a minute. Add another 15-30 seconds if it’s not completely melted.
Step three: Once soap cubes have liquified add a few drops of the lemon essential oil and the lemon zest; stir well.
Step four: Pour into soap molds and allow to harden for at least one hour. Press mold to release soap.
